. . . may I introduce myself ?

MY NAME IS KYPROS, CYPRUS.

From my youth (I was born many thousands of years ago) I’ve had a very stormy life: earthquakes, floods and other nature forces have formed my appearance; but also by humans caused disasters, occupations, wars have influenced my countenance. I spoiled - at that time - Aphrodite and gave Othello shelter, entertained the crusaders and endured the domination of the Franks and Venetians; then the Turks overtook me and tore big wounds; and - when they came for the second time - they cut me in two parts which made my heart bleed; then the English....but I don’t want to complain here - I’m not like that, I am, as you know, an optimist. I’ve learned the art of surviving.

Also my children - there are over 800,000 - are lively and hospitable. They’ll happily welcome you and will show you proudly my treasures : the features of my body show a varied coastline with beaches that are easy to reach, that’s for sure; but I’ve also got my rough sides where steep rocks fall into the sea and are only every now and then interrupted by dreamy sandy bays, that’s my secret.....But all in all I am surrounded by a crystal-clear sea since I am an island, you’re probably familiar with that. Well the sun it shines daily, they’ve calculated that I’m exposed to about 340 days of sunshine in a year. That makes it easy for me to let voluptuous grapes ripen, not to speak about the many other herbs, vegetables and fruits, all of which I really couldn’t mention here: mandarins, lemons, oranges, bananas. In any case my children make wine out of the grapes and, yes, brandy - I honestly have to admit, they drink a bit too much....; and they like to eat - of course not by themselves -, “kopiaste”, come over here friends and join us!

On my hunchback I’ve got an enormous burden of lumps to carry : 2000 m. being the highest mountainous peak. All around there stretches a wild mountainous countryside with woods and colourful flowers, with valleys and hidden monasteries which you won’t find anywhere else.

Surely, I’ve suffered a lot of pain during the centuries due to strangers but that has made me rich as well as wise - without being presumptuous. I am a synthesis out of East and West - of which you can convince yourself - and I name the beautiful roman mosaics my own, to give you only two examples. But I also live modern and lively in this century, maybe a bit unEuropean, that may be the case, but then again I don’t belong - geographically anyway - to this continent. Never mind - yes, I can also speak a bit of English....., if you want to know anymore, just pay me a visit.
